Travel
Several major airlines
have regular stops to the Belize City International
Airport (BZE). From BZE, you have three
main travel options that will get you to
River House Lodge:
-
Quickest: Take a "hopper plane" to
Dangriga (~20 minute flight from BZE).
The hopper plane is a great way to see the entire
coastline, islands and reefs. Once at River
House Lodge you can also rent either a truck or van
for flexibility in your Belize exploration.
-
Most Flexible:
Rent a car at BZE or you can rent a truck or van
once at River House Lodge. The drive from BZE
is a scenic (~4 hour)
drive to River House Lodge which takes you from
the coast, through the mountains and back down to
the coast and along the Sittee River to the Lodge.
-
Most Economical: Take a bus from
BZE to the capital city of Belmopan. Change buses in Belmopan
and head toward
Hopkins Village. The journey
takes about 6-8 hours.
Remember that once you
arrive at BZE you are now on Belizean time, so relax and
enjoy the experience.

Typical hopper plane seats
12 passengers and will accommodate the same luggage as
on an international flight.

If you are going to travel
via the bus system, you will need to travel very light.

Factoids:
English is the official language of
Belize, although Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and Mayan are widely
spoken throughout the country.
The Belize Dollar has been tied to the
U.S. dollar at an official rate of $2BZ = $1US. US dollars are gladly accepted throughout Belize,
but it may sometimes be difficult to get change for larger bills.
Visitors with US dollars do not need to worry about changing the
money into Belize dollars.
Upon departure from Belize, you must
pay an airport security and departure tax. The current charge is $35
(BZ$70), which the various airline ticketing agents collect (Cash
Only!) upon
check-in.
