Kayaking
River House Lodge is located right on the banks of the
Sittee River, which snakes its way to the Caribbean Sea
just south of Hopkins Village.
Kayaking near River House Lodge
will allow you to explore
this spectacular estuarine river system, which changes
from a dense vine draped jungle at the Lodge to
a large mangrove forest closer to the sea.
A Sittee
River/Boom Creek kayak adventure allows you to sneak up to
the native wildlife. During the evening sun, you will
likely spot green and orange iguanas lounging in trees
and maybe a crocodile or turtle resting at the water's
edge. You may also see or at least hear from parrots,
toucans, motmots, herons and egrets. Some folks have
even seen river otters, sting rays and manatees in the river.
Near River House Lodge is
the world's only jaguar preserve, the 120,000 acre
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition to
spectacular 'hiking' found there, you may also take a
kayak run suitable for even beginners.
This spectacular trip,
which includes a series of small rapids, is on the South
Stann Creek and begins with a stop at the
traditional village of Maya Center where Mayan arts and
crafts are for sale and takes about five to six hours to
complete. With over 290 recorded species of birds this
park it is ideal for birders and in addition to the
elusive jaguar it is possible to
get a glimpse at some of the other inhabitants
(jaguarondi, margays, ocelots, pumas, deer, howler
monkeys and tapirs) or if you are lucky river otters
even may join you!
Sea Kayaking
Sea kayaking is also
available from River House Lodge. From the crystal
blue waters of the Caribbean you can explore Belize's
barrier reef and small islands, some sprinkled with lush
mangrove habitats and others, with tropical sand beaches
and waving palms.
Sea kayaking is ideal on
the calm waters of the Inner channel area between the
mainland and the barrier reef.
