Birding
Belize is home to 4,000 species of native flowering
plants, 250 varieties of wild orchids, 700 species of
native trees and 550 species of birds.
Birds thrive in all of
Belize's habitats. Wading birds congregate along the
coastline and inner lagoons. The grasslands and savannas
provide seeds for the many finches, and nesting trees
for the giant Jabiru Stork. In the tropical forests
there is an astonishing diversity of bird species.
Early morning and late
afternoon are excellent times to bird watch, as most
bird species are feeding or moving to new locations
during these times.
River House Lodge is an
excellent location to see and hear a number of magnificent bird
species. Herons, flycatchers, egrets, kingfishers,
hummingbirds, parrots, and toucans (the national bird of
Belize) are not unusual.
Trogons, parakeets,
macaws, and the great curassow are a few of the other
more notable birds that you can spot in the area.
