About The Area

Belize is both Caribbean and Central American and so provides a uniquely Belizean culture.  River House Lodge is located in the Stann Creek District of Belize and is right on the banks of the Sittee River.  The Sittee River is one of the largest waterways in Belize and changes from a dense vine draped jungle at River House Lodge to a large mangrove forest closer to the sea.

Belize is for the adventurous traveler. If you’re looking for a large resort with a pristine white beach and attendants catering to your every need, then this is not the place for you. What Belize does offer is an opportunity to explore Belize, and River House Lodge provides you with the ideal location and amenities to discover the hidden treasures both on and off shore.

Best known for its diving, Belize is nestled along almost 200 miles (322 km) of pristine barrier reef – second in size only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – and offers some of the best wall and reef dives in the world. Between the mainland and the barrier reef sit more than 450 cayes, islets and islands and three out of the Western Hemisphere’s four coral atolls – Lighthouse Reef, Glover’s Reef and Turneffe Atoll.

But if you come to Belize to just dive, you will miss other unique treasures of a country where rainforests abound and tourism is the primary industry.

One of the things that makes Belize such a spectacular destination is its natural beauty. There are over 900 ancient Mayan ruins scattered around the country, which is also riddled with caves, the vast majority of which remain unexplored, unnamed, and unknown to modern man. Belize is home to 4,000 species of native flowering plants, 250 varieties of wild orchids, 700 species of native trees and 550 species of birds.

From lounging by the pool sipping a cold beverage, strolling along the beach, or fishing for the big one, to diving with whale sharks, cave tubing, jungle hiking or Mayan ruin exploration, the only question is:

What adventure do you want to do today?
